Be Excellent for Christ


If we are to mature spiritually, we must strive for excellence. In doing so, we should examine our motives. It should be about exalting God and not ourselves. Pursuing excellence is found in Scripture.

Love The Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. —Matthew 22:37-38

First of all, love God.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things. —Philippians 4:8

Second, “Get your head in the game.” Excuse my sports analogy — I hear them rather often in my household! It’s appropriate here, though because a lot of the battle for excellence is in our heads. Focus on solutions and what you can do to strive for excellence in your life and in the life of our church. One way you can accomplish this is by coming to church each Sunday. Woody Allen is quoted as saying, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” There’s a nugget of truth in there somewhere. When you show up on Sundays, and at other times in the life of the church, you are in fellowship with believers who will pray for and encourage you — and whom you can encourage and lift in prayer. God speaks to you through His Word, prayer, and through fellow believers. Attending church weekly will help you to stay on the course God has laid for you. And if you find yourself veering off course, or struggling with negative thoughts, meditate on Philippians 4:8.

So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of The Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church. 1 Corinthians 14:12

Third, use your spiritual gifts. God gives us our gifts so we can use them to build up His church. Explore ways that you can use your gifts at New Bethesda and then commit to serving. Using your spiritual gifts will feed your soul as well as bless others.

But since you excel in everything — in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you — see that you also excel in this grace of giving. 2 Corinthians 8:7

You can always give you time and financial resources to help our church accomplish the mission Our Lord gave us, which is to exalt Christ, reach the lost, and meet the needs of those in our community and beyond.

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8
